Deborah married a very loving and devoted husband Leslie Lewis in Wisconsin. They moved to Iowa and had boy and girl twins, Sean and Nicole before moving to their present home just south of St. Louis, Missouri.
She was born in Wisconsin and adopted at age one and a half years old due to a serious heart condition that would require open heart surgery at the age of 12. The day she was born was the day her parents applied for adoption. A sealed adoption through Catholic Charities took one and a half years to get through the paperwork.
Approximately five years ago, Deborah received a phone call from an agency in Wisconsin asking if she knew her birth name and if she was born in Wisconsin. The laws had changed in Wisconsin and now both parents, siblings and adoptees could unseal the adoption records as long as both parties agreed. She was told that she had nine brothers and sisters that she never knew existed. That summer she met her birth mom and nine brothers and sisters and their families for the first time.
Deborah was always told that the reason for her adoption was that her birth mother was older and studying for a career in nursing and her birth father was also interested in his career. The birth parents didn’t think that things would work out between the two of them both financially and for a permanent relationship. Therefore, they decided it was best that she be put up for adoption. It was not until after meeting and getting to know her birth mom that Deborah questioned her birth mom about her birth father that Deborah found out the real reason for the adoption was that she was conceived by a rape.
Prior to her birth family finding her, Deborah felt that it was too self-righteous to stand with Pro-Life signs in a Life Chain and that she had no right to impose her beliefs on anyone even knowing in a very positive way her whole life that she was adopted. But after meeting, getting to know and loving her birth family and the truth of her conception she has felt the need to speak out.
She gives a face to the goodness of life which is brought out by even the most evil of acts as rape. Come and meet and hear her compelling and inspirational life story.
